Spring Happenings at Mater Dei

Dear Parents and Students,

I hope this letter finds you enjoying Spring Break.  I will be attending the National Catholic Education Association Conference in Indianapolis.  This will be an opportunity to meet with educators from across the country and continue to improve the quality of Catholic education we provide.

Congratulations to the Boys’ Basketball team for winning a regional title against Paoli on March 10.  Sophomore Hank LaRue was named MVP of the tournament.  Our new coach, Mr. Kurt Wildeman, has provided outstanding leadership this season.

Congratulations to the Speech Team and their coach, Mrs. Donna Lefler, for winning their first sectional title in thirty years.  Reitz had won 26 in a row and the last four years have alternated between Reitz and Signature School.  The team has twenty entries for State, one of the highest out of any high school in Indiana.

On March 5 the faculty participated in an in-service.  It included a presentation from our Youth First Social Worker, Mrs. Valorie Dassel, regarding helping students cope with grief.  We have had five parents of students pass away this year, so this topic is especially pertinent.  Please continue to keep these families in your prayers.

On March 18 we hosted Career Day and welcomed over forty guests to speak about various career options.  Students attended three sessions of their choice and had the opportunity to ask questions.  Thank you to Mrs. Kelly Ubelhor and the Career Day committee for organizing this event.

Our Chaplain, Fr. Ken Steckler, left for his six month sabbatical to the Appalachian Mountains earlier this week.  When he returns, he will no longer be the Mater Dei chaplain so he can devote more time to his parishes, Holy Angels in New Harmony and St. Matthew in Mount Vernon.  On behalf of the Mater Dei community, I want to sincerely thank Fr. Ken for all he has done to enrich the spirituality of the school over the last ten years.  Sr. Donna Marie Herr and Mr. Scott Whitehouse have made arrangements for masses, prayer services, and retreats for the remainder of the school year.

The school year will fly by once we return from Spring Break.  I pray that this Easter season will be a joyful time in your lives.

God Bless.
