From the Mayor
3/1/2010
After all those snow days, it sure was good to finally get back into the swing of things!

The Mater Dei-ville Student Council has definitely been hard at work.  The basketball homecoming dance, Party Hearty, was a huge success!  Students enjoyed live music videos which were seen on a projector screen as well as live video footage of the dance.  Special thanks to Hacienda for donating the chips and salsa for the students, the chaperones for volunteering their time, and Mr. Thomas for his help setting up the equipment.   A very special thanks to Mr. Smith for his time mixing music and setting up the projector and cameras for the dance.  Finally, thanks to all the students for supporting the Student Council on this event.

Candy grams were very successful this year!  An incredible 430 valentines were passed out to our students and faculty!  Thanks to everyone who participated.

Since Lent has officially begun, the Rice Bowl program will now take effect in homeroom.  Each Day the bowl will be passed around in homeroom.  Students are encouraged to give up a soft drink or snack each week and donate the money to the Rice Bowl.  Once Lent ends, the money collected will be donated to the Vladvistock mission in Russia.

All the money collected from the January 29 spirit dress fundraiser has been donated to help with the relief effort in Haiti.  Our students, faculty, and staff raised approximately $500 which will be used to buy food and water for the school children of Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish.   This parish recently took in over 80 of the earthquake refugees.

Thank you to the community for your tremendous support for the Mater Dei-ville Student Council.  Without you, nothing like this would be possible!

Have a wonderful Spring Break!

Safe Fun on Spring Break
3/1/2010
Spring break will be here before we know it.  Many of us will vacation with family while many of our students will fly solo on their own adventures.  While most of us will have good, safe fun, it is still important to be aware of the consequences of the negative choices that may face some of our students.

As we make our trips, whether they are across the state or across the country, it is illegal for a minor to drive with alcohol in the car, even in the trunk, unless accompanied by one parent or guardian.  If the minor is caught with alcohol in the car and is under 18, the court shall order their driver’s license be suspended for at least 60 days.  If the minor is older than 18, their license may be suspended up to one year.  The additional penalty for this could be 0-180 days in jail or a fine up to $1,000.  This last penalty also applies to public intoxication.  This is defined as being under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance in a public place.

While we know most of our students will not engage in drinking, we want to take this time to make sure you are educated, as well as our students, about the consequences of underage drinking.   It is our job as parents to make sure our kids understand the dangers and the possible consequences of drinking and drugs.  Please discuss with your kids all of the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Include in your discussion the expectations you have concerning proper behavior.  You, as parents have the most influence over the choices your kids make.
