MD Wrestlers Win Team State Duals

Congratulations to the Mater Dei Wrestling Team for winning the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association (IHSWCA) Team State Duals at Ball State University.  The wrestlers began the day with a 73-3 victory over Westfield followed by a 56 to 9  win over New Palestine.  In the semi finals, the Wildcats defeated # 4 ranked Warren Central 43 to 22.  Mater Dei won a hard fought match against # 2 Perry Meridian with a final score of 31 to 27

Four years ago the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) dropped the Team State Duals, and as a result, the IHSWCA decided to keep the tournament alive and organize the event.  Mater Dei has qualified each year placing fifth in 2013, finishing second in 2014, and capturing the title in 2015.

During the 2014 season, she was named to the All County First Team and Second Team All State.  “Sydney is a great student-athlete who is well-respected by her peers and teammates,” IU Southeast head coach Joe Witten said. “She is a competitive player who will have a big impact for our team.”

Schickel plans to attend Butler University and continue her basketball career.  A member of the Indiana Junior All-Stars Core 6, she has helped lead her basketball team to two back to back Class 2A state championships in 2012 and 2013 and a Class 3A state runner up title for the Lady Wildcats in 2014.  Schickel, a 6'3" center, set a state record in the 2A championship game in 2013 for most rebounds in the finals and tied the record in the 3A championship game in 2014.  She is a three- time All Conference selection in girls basketball and three-time First Team All Metro.  In 2013 she was First Team IBCA Underclass All State selection and AP Honorable Mention All State, and in 2014 was a First Team IBCA Underclass All State selection and AP Second Team All State.  In addition to basketball, Schickel is also a four-year varsity member of the volleyball team and three-time All Conference selection.

Football Season Re-Cap

Congratulations to the Varsity Football team
for its truly remarkable and memorable season.  Before a packed house at the Reitz Bowl, the Wildcats raced to the schools 5th undefeated regular season with a  win over the Panthers.  The victory earned outright  City and SIAC championships and the West Side Nut Club Trophy for Mater Dei.  The excitement continued with Sectional, Regional, and excellent Semi-State Championships,  giving the Wildcats a berth into the final weekend of the season at Lucas Oil on Thanksgiving weekend. The Cats finished as IHSAA State Runner-Up title with a 14-1 record.  The team and coaches so appreciated the vocal following of the students and the great MD fan base throughout the season.

The Junior Varsity team completed its season as undefeated City and SIAC champions.  The JV team was coached by Jordan Phelps, Joe Phelps, and Cody Hess.   The Freshman team won the City
title as well.  The Freshmen coaches are Jeff Jewell, Josh Rice, Nathan Wright, Eric Wildeman, Nolan Goebel and Michael Montgomery.  Though smaller than most opponents, the Mater Dei Cub team performed with great heart and courage in garnering three victories.  The Cubs were coached by Mater Dei's newest father, Nathan Wildeman along with Tom Johnson, Adam Wilmes and Danny Martin.

Mater Dei Men’s Club newsletter

The Mater Dei Men’s Club was established in 2004 as a non-profit organization whose purpose was to be a financial supporter to the athletic department and all 19 of Mater Dei’s IHSAA sanctioned sporting teams.  This support includes working closely with the athletic director and all team coaches on fulfilling their requests, such as equipment needs, uniforms, practice gear, travel expenses, etc.,  so parents of the athletes and the school don’t have to.
