Maura also is Indiana’s girls’ career assists leader with 704 assists.  According to girls’ basketball coach, Steve Goans, “What differentiates her from other big scorers is usually you won’t see the assist total with it.”   Maura is averaging 23 points and a state-leading nine assists per game for Mater Dei.

Mater Dei Football Concludes Excellent Regular Season

The 2013 Mater Football Teams have enjoyed very successful regular seasons.  The teams demonstrated outstanding character and heart as each squad added to the Mater Dei Tradition of Excellence.
The Cub Football Team claimed the Evansville City and SIAC titles with its 30-7 victory over Reitz.  The youthful Cats finished undefeated with a perfect 6-0 record in the City and SIAC and 8-1 overall.  Congratulations to coaches Nathan Wildeman, Thomas Johnson, Neil Hammelman,  Adam Wilmes and to all of the players and parents for providing such an exciting and entertaining season.
The Freshman Football Team completed its year much improved in a tale of two seasons.  After a season opening victory, the frosh suffered through several losses.  Instead of giving up, the determined freshmen made us proud by winning 2 of their last 3 games and they fought to the very end in 3 other very close contests. Congratulations to the vastly improved freshman team along with their coaches, Jeff Jewell, Josh Rice, Eric Wildeman, Nathan Wright, and Mike Montgomery.
The Junior Varsity Team finished the year with an exciting come-from-behind 27-20 victory over Reitz. The victory earned the Wildcats undefeated and undisputed City and SIAC Championships.  The 8-0 Wildcats were coached by Jordan Phelps, Joe Phelps, and Cody Hess.  Congratulations!
As the Varsity Football team earned a hard-fought 16-14 victory over the Reitz Panthers before a huge crowd and brought home the West Side Nut Club Trophy!  That win enabled the Wildcats to claim the City and SIAC Championships outright!  The 2013 Cats, while working to improve in the post-season, became only the 4th team in school history to complete the regular season undefeated with a 9-0 record.  Their season ended in the sectional championship game when they were defeated by Southridge 21-19.
The Wildcat football teams and coaches extend thanks to the cheerleaders, the parents, the students, and to all of our wonderful fans for the outstanding support throughout the regular season.

A Guide to Preparing to Play Athletics in College

Many student athletes in high school wish to continue to play a sport in college.   A guide to preparing to play at the college level--the necessary steps that need to be taken while in high school beginning with freshman year--is available by clicking

New Mater Dei Boys’ Golf Coach
Mater Dei has hired former graduate Nick Frazer to take over the boys golf program.   Frazer is a 2004 graduate of Mater Dei where he was a former all city and all conference golfer.

Frazer has been the runner-up the last two years in the Evansville Men's City Golf Tournament.   Frazer replaces Jim Cheaney who accepted the men's golf position at USI.
New MD Softball Coach
Mater Dei has hired Dave Gossman as the new head softball coach.  He was a 1973 graduate of Mater Dei High School and member of the athletic hall of fame.  Gossman played football, baseball, wrestled, and ran track.
He attended the University of Evansville on a football scholarship where he also participated in wrestling and track and was inducted into the UE athletic hall of fame in 1991.
Gossman had been instrumental in creating the Newburgh youth softball leagues as well as coaching on several travel softball teams including several members of Castle’s 2002 state championship softball team.
Gossman will replace Shelly Aull who resigned after the end of the season.   Mater Dei graduated only one senior off of their 2012 city and SIAC championship team.

Mater Dei Names Baseball Coach

Mater Dei High School has announced that Steve Ricketts has been named the new varsity head baseball coach.  Ricketts will be taking over a program that finished as the 2A IHSAA runner-up in 2012.
He has been an assistant with the baseball program since 1992 and has been a football assistant since 1993.

Steve is a 1985 graduate of Mater Dei High School where he played football and baseball.  He attended and graduated from the University of Southern Indiana where he also played baseball from 1986-1989.

Mater Dei Athletic Director, Joe Herrmann comments, "We are obviously excited about Steve becoming the head coach.   Steve has been very loyal to Mater Dei and will no doubt do a tremendous job of leading the Mater Dei baseball program."

Steve is currently a P.E. teacher at Westside Catholic School.   He can be reached at 589-3029.

Volleyball Coach
Mater Dei welcomes Ashley King as the new volleyball coach.  King will take over a program that has won the last 3 sectionals and were also the 2012 co city champions.
King played collegiately for four years as a setter at the University of Southern Indiana.
King graduated from Columbus North High School (Columbus, IN) where she has earned seven varsity letters in volleyball and track and field...was 11th in the Indiana High School Athletic Association with 9.49 assists per game in 2008...earned All-Conference Indiana honors and was named to the Indiana South All-Star team...set the school record for assists in 2006, 2007, and 2008...also helped lead CNHS to a 25-9 overall record, 7-0 CI, and the 2008 Conference Indiana title.  (taken from USI athletics web page)
King also competed with the Circle City Volleyball Club based out of Indianapolis.

Boys' Soccer Coach

Mater Dei has hired Scott Henderson as their next boys’ soccer coach.  Henderson will take over a program that has won the last two regionals in Class 1A and were also the 2011 State Runners Up.
Henderson spent seven years as the head girls coach at Harrison compiling a 54-49 record.  In 2007 he was the District 6 Girls’ Coach of the Year.  Henderson has spent 12 years coaching for the SWISA club.
Henderson played collegiately for the University of Southern Indiana after graduating from Memorial H.S. where he was a 1997 all city selection.

Mater Dei Athletic Director, Joe Herrmann, comments, “Scott has been coaching for several years on both the club level and high school level.  We feel like the experience he brings will greatly benefit the development of players at Mater Dei and will help lead us forward.   Obviously it’s very difficult to replace Coach Settles, he meant so much to this program and he will be missed but we feel like Scott can help ease the transition and continue where Coach Settles left off.”
